Beginner motocross – which bike to start with?
Motocross for beginners starts with the right bike: light, forgiving and matching your height. For newcomers, five Honda models come into question – CRF125F, CRF125F Big Wheel, CRF150R, CRF250F and CRF250R. Here you see which of them Honda Motorrad Zürich has in stock, new and used; CRF150R and CRF250F are available on request.

CRF150R and CRF250F – on request
Two more Honda models for newcomers that are not in stock: Honda Motorrad Zürich supplies them on request.
Honda CRF150R
The entry-level motocross bike for teenagers: a water-cooled four-stroke with 149.7 cc and Unicam four-valve head, as the standard version with 17- and 14-inch wheels and as the CRF150R Expert with 19 and 16 inches for taller riders (Honda USA data, model year 2026). Honda Motorrad Zürich supplies the CRF150R on request – availability and price are checked individually.
Honda CRF250F
The off-road bike for beginners and leisure riders: an air-cooled 250 cc single-cylinder four-stroke with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, built for friendly power rather than lap times (Honda USA data, model year 2025). Not road-legal – for tracks and private grounds. Honda Motorrad Zürich supplies the CRF250F on request – availability and price are checked individually.
Which motocross bike for beginners?
Height, weight and experience are decisive. Smaller and lighter newcomers start on the CRF125F or the CRF125F Big Wheel with more seat height. The CRF150R is the classic entry into the competition class for teenagers, the CRF250F a forgiving off-road bike for leisure and practice. The Honda CRF250R fits once the first courses are behind you; the CRF450R is not a beginner bike.
Detailed help with the decision is given in the MX-Academy guide which motocross bike is best for beginners.
Ride first, then buy: the motocross taster course
The taster course takes place every second Wednesday. One hour of riding time including breaks is available, plus registration, theory and putting on the gear. Bike and complete protective gear can be rented; no previous experience and no licence are needed. If you continue, you ride in the motocross course on four different tracks.
Gear for beginners
For the first course everything can be rented. For your own bike you need a helmet, goggles, boots, gloves and protectors – the right motocross gear is in the shop.
Frequently asked questions – Motocross for beginners
Which motocross bike for beginners?
Depending on height and experience the CRF125F, the CRF125F Big Wheel, the CRF150R or the CRF250F. The CRF250R fits after the first courses.
Can I try motocross without my own bike?
Yes. In the motocross taster course of the MX-Academy, bike and protective gear can be rented.
125 or 250 to start with?
If you are small and light or completely new, start on the CRF125F. Taller newcomers with some riding experience choose a 250 – the forgiving CRF250F or the CRF250R.
Do you need a licence for motocross?
No. Motocross is ridden on closed tracks and private grounds, so no licence is needed.
How much does it cost to get into motocross?
The cheapest way is the taster course with rental bike and gear – current prices are on mx-academy.ch. For your own bike: used bikes are cheaper than new ones, the prices are shown for every bike in the list (non-binding, prices may change at any time).
